What is Valtrex

Valtrex is an antiviral drug which used to treat certain herpes infections, including herpes zoster (the painful rash known as shingles), genital herpes, and herpes cold sores on the face and lips. Valtrex stops viral replication and combats the herpes virus attacking it and slowing it down from replicating itself in the system allowing the body to assist in the natural defense of the spread of this virus ultimately limiting both the duration and frequency of outbreaks. Valtrex will not cure herpes, it just lessen the symptoms of the infection.

What does Valtrex and when is it used?

Valtrex is acting drug on the virus of the varicella-zoster, Zoster origin, and the herpes virus, vesicles on the skin and mucous membranes (e.g., the lips, cheeks, mouth and genitalia). The active principle of Valtrex hinders the spread of the herpes virus without interfering in normal metabolic processes. The herpes virus cause a formation of vesicles on the skin and mucous membranes.

Valtrex is also used in the prevention of infection with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease after renal transplantation.

Valtrex coated tablets are administered in the case of Zoster, herpes Labialis and genital, and in the prevention of CMV infection. Valtrex must be used only on medical prescription.

How to use Valtrex?

Except contrary medical prescription, the usual dosage applied in the treatment of shingles in adults is 1000 mg of Valtrex 3 times daily for 7 days.

To treat a herpes infection: Valtrex 500 mg, 2 times daily for 5 days; your doctor will set the duration of the treatment.

Prevention of recurrences of herpes simplex: Valtrex 500 mg per day, 500 mg of Valtrex 2 times a day in the case where patients have an immune deficiency, the duration of the treatment must however be determined each time by the doctor.

Prevention of infection / disease in CMV: 2 g Valtrex 4 times a day for the duration of treatment prescribed by the doctor.

In the case of renal failure, the doctor will conduct a dosage adjustment.

Treatment by virostatics must be continued during the term prescribed by the doctor. The symptoms often dissipating before total cure of the infection, it is important to continue the treatment for a few days beyond their disappearance. A period of insufficient use or a premature cessation of treatment may cause a relapse.
